How to Select Curtain Fabric

Posted By admin on Apr 14, 2013

If you’re going to make your own curtains there are a lot of things you need to take into consideration. The most important option, however, is the type of fabric that you’re going to use. Everything from the thickness to the colour or pattern and how much light it will block will go into helping you figure out exactly what it is you want in a curtain. When it is time to choose your fabric make sure to take your time and look at all your options.

You can make curtains out of just about any material and each one has a different list of advantages and disadvantages. Silk, for example, looks great at first but it can fade quickly in the sun so it is often not chosen. Other options might be heavier than people like or block out too little or too much sun. Choosing which material you want your curtains made out of is the first of many decisions you should make.

Thread Count

The higher the thread count in the material you choose the thicker it is likely to be and also more durable. High thread count options will typically block out more sun than lower choices so depending on what it is you’re looking for in a curtain you can often influence the look and feel quite a bit in this one area.

There are many options when it comes to the type of weave you have for your curtains. Plain, twill, damask or satin are all common for decorator fabrics which are traditionally used in curtains. In this area it is primarily going to be a choice based on your personal taste though each weave will have different features in regard to how it feels and how it fits in the window.

Cutting the fabric to the right width is important. Most people want their curtains to fit just over the edges of the windows so it will block out more light. Others, however, prefer to have their curtains fitted to just inside the molding of the window. No matter what size you need the curtains, make sure it is cut professionally to ensure it is perfectly straight and will be the right width for your windows.

Colour and Design

Choosing the colour and design of the fabric you use is also quite important. Make sure it matches with the rest of the room it is in and if you have a pattern on the fabric make sure it will line up well within the window.
Making Your Decisions

It is easy to see that there are a lot of different options to choose from when it comes to picking the material for your curtains. In addition to your own preferences you’ll want to take into account things like the amount of sun which comes through that window and at which times of the day you’re likely to have it open or closed. Taking your time and making the right choice can help ensure you’ll love the look of your new curtains for years to come.
